Leaving AUT in Kaisermühlen

A visit to the United Nations   We, the 5HLWS, had a guided tour through the UNO-City (officially called Vienna International Centre). We had to pass the security check, then entered international territory. Our guide Charles told us about the various flags. We could understand his English very well.

The big conference room looked old-fashioned, but impressive. To become an interpreter at the UN you have to speak three of the official languages (English, French, Chinese, Russian, Arabic, Spanish) fluently. After visiting the conference room our guide told us some facts about Kofi Annan, the Secretary General, and the various organisations. Therefore he also showed us a film about the development and missions of the UN and the "blue helmets”, who aren’t real soldiers because they do not use weapons. The next part of our guided tour through the building was the miniature model of the VIC and a map of the world showing the positions of the various councils. It was a very interesting excursion and it was nice to learn more about the international activities in the world.
